Welcome!

We're Karl & Mallory (& Rose), two scientists/policymakers who are passionate about food & sustainability. We hope you'll enjoy cooking with us to build a better environment, bite by bite.

What We're All About

Recipe for Disaster is here to help all of us eaters and cooks to vote with our dollars & our forks.

What we put on our plates can bring us joy, connection, and meaning - and it can be a powerful tool to fight the crises of climate change, environmental degradation, and injustice.

We all hear statistics about how much food gets wasted, how natural disasters like droughts are endangering food supply chains, and how pollutants like pesticides can harm our health. But, there aren't many good guides to help us improve, especially when our choices are limited, we are busy, and affordability may be a challenge. We are here to help!

Keep it Simple

"Peasant food" is at the heart of how we learned to cook, and it can benefit our environment. We go back to basics, the familiar, and the comforting. We learned from our families: from stories and lessons of farming, pickling, eeling, and sometimes going hungry. Our recipes often have few ingredients, which can also help the wallet. We stray away from specialty ingredients you'll wonder how to use up and keep meat to a minimum.

Close to Home

While every reader's local foodshed is different, we emphasize using seasonal ingredients and give advice for growing things at home. We focus on cutting down on plastic, composting food scraps, and becoming involved in the vast world of local food. We draw inspiration from the amazing leaders before us, including those that honor indigenous and tribal legacies of food cultivation and cooking.

Be Mindful

Recipe for Disaster is an homage to ingredients, acknowledging the fact that everything we consume takes a toll on our environment. Eating is a political, economic, social, communal, and highly personal act we do every day. Our recipes try to reduce the impact, beyond surface value, and celebrate the gift of food. We encourage cooking and eating (and everything in between) to be done deliberately, considerately, & respectfully. We're figuring it out and will share the challenges and wins along the way.
